Majesty
of the Highlands
The deep lochs, heather-carpeted glens and dense forests of the Scottish Highlands are home to some of Britain’s rarest wildlife. This unspoilt and peaceful landscape also hides a complex and
fascinating history, as the scene of many bloody battles between the English and Scottish.
En route to our hotel in the Highlands we visit RSPB Vane Farm (pictured left), part of the Loch Leven National Nature Reserve.
Spring and summer are fantastic seasons to be here, when migratory birds such as geese and swallows are paying a visit.
Head to the teaching ponds to catch sight of tiny froglets in spring while the energetic can climb Vane Hill; the reward is a beautiful view from the top.
Built in imposing Scots Baronial style, the National Trust’s Brodie Castle (pictured left) is in the heart of the Moray countryside.
The surrounding woodland is perfect for a stroll while inside there is plenty to see – including unusual plasterwork and fine collections of art and furniture.
After a couple of hours here, we journey to the National Trust’s Culloden Visitor Centre, a fascinating facility that tells the story of the 18th century clashes between the Jacobites and the British Government.
We explore the RSPB Osprey Centre, set in ancient pinewoods by picturesque RSPB Loch Garten, the ancestral home of Scottish ospreys.
The centre overlooks the nest of these rare fish-eating birds of prey, who can be viewed directly with provided binoculars, while live cameras relayed from the nest bring you face to face with the intimacies of osprey family life.
There is plenty of other wildlife to see too, including red squirrels, crested tits and woodpeckers.
We begin today with a picturesque drive through stunning countryside, familiar to fans of the television series Monarch of the Glen.
We’ll travel to the historic town of Fort William before following the beautiful ‘Road of the Isles’ to the National Trust’s Glenfinnian Monument.
Built on the banks of Loch Sheil, the monument commemorates the clansmen who fought and died for the Jacobite cause.
We depart after breakfast to begin our journey home, calling first at Argaty Red Kites, a farm that runs central Scotland’s only feeding station for these wonderful birds of prey.
We’ll spend four nights at the wonderful, family-owned Carrbridge Hotel in the Highlands.
Located in the heart of the pretty village of Carrbridge, the hotel offers beautiful views of the Cairngorm mountains and well-equipped en suite rooms.
On the first and last nights of the break, we’ll also stay at a comfortable hotel in the Glasgow area.
