Northumberland

Holy Island or Lindisfarne to use its traditional name is credited with being the first place that Christianity came to Britain. Set in a stunning landscape designed by 'Capability' Brown, Alnwick Castle is the family home of the Duke of Northumberland. Owned by his family since 1309, this beautiful castle, originally built to defend England from the Scots, now appeals to visitors of all ages from across the world and considered to be one of the finest castles in England, and known as the 'Windsor of the North'.

Today, it is a wonderful place to explore their huge array of horticultural delights and the rarity of their ‘Poison Garden’ behind the sinister locked gates, featuring plants behind such as mandrake, tobacco and belladonna. Alnwick Castle is an attraction of real significance, with lavish State Rooms, superb art treasures, fun activities and entertainment, all set in a beautiful landscape – a most see attraction.



Step Back in Time

Hadrian's Wall

Covering 73 miles, Hadrian’s Wall, a World Heritage site, is the best known frontier in the Roman Empire and whether you are covering a short section of the wall or spending a week walking its entire length, Hadrian’s Wall is a step back in time of nearly 2,000 years. The wall’s most dramatic site, and one of the best preserved Roman fort in the country, is at Chester's Fort. This fortified village gives a fantastic example and insight into life in the Iron Age.

  • Bamburgh’s impressive castle sits on a basalt outcrop overlooking the Farne Islands and can be seen from the stunning Blue Flag beaches.


  • The seaside town of Seahouses also known as ‘The Gateway to the Farne Islands’. It has an interesting harbour and magnificent beaches are also home to the local RNLI station which is open to the public and offers a valuable lesson into their history, along with fascinating memorabilia.


  • Take a break in Alnwick Garden’s Tree House restaurant and bar with locally sourced food and own ‘nest’ to hide away for an intimate meal. This amazing structure shows that the treehouse isn’t just for children and is also accessible by wheelchair.


  • Grey seal spotting at Holy Island is a fantastic opportunity to see these charming creatures in their natural habitat. .
