Castles
and Capability Brown
In the 18th century, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown singlehandedly invented a new style of garden design. An immediate hit amongst the aristocracy, his signature landscapes sought to perfect nature and many of them still survive today, in the parklands of some of our most celebrated estates.
Croft Castle (pictured left) was home to the Croft family for almost a thousand years. The house’s exterior is an interesting blend of castle and country house while the interior is a fine example of grand Georgian elegance. Spend some time soaking up the atmosphere of the saloon, where you can play a hand of cards.
From here we go to Berrington Hall, an exquisite 18th century mansion with commanding views over the Capability Brown-designed parkland and beyond to the wilderness of the Brecon Beacons. Highlights of the interior include a nursery, Victorian laundry and Georgian dairy.
With canals, meticulously clipped hedges and ancient plant species, Westbury Court Garden is the only restored Dutch water garden in the land. Originally laid out between 1696 and 1705, it has been revived using historically accurate varieties including some of the oldest surviving holm oaks.
We spend the rest of the day exploring Croome (pictured left), Capability Brown’s first complete landscape and the one that made his name. Along with Brown, Robert Adam and James Wyatt also helped design the mansion, Croome Court, and the temples and follies scattered throughout the parkland.
Included for free: ‘Going Dutch in Gloucestershire’ tour at Westbury Court Garden.
We spend the day at Powis Castle (pictured left). The house and garden make for an intriguing mix; the castle perched on high a rather forbidding prospect while the garden mixes the best of sophisticated French and Italian styles.
Once you’ve torn yourself away from the latter’s graceful terraces, aviary and orangery, the castle contains fabulous collections of paintings and furniture – some of the finest in Wales. Home for generations to the Herbert family, there are also interesting connections to Clive of India.
On our final day we check out of our hotel and head to a handpicked National Trust property on the way home, where we’ll make a short stop.
Holme Lacy
Grade I Listed, 1674
Close to the bucolic scenery of the Wye Valley, this Grade I-listed Georgian house is surrounded by twenty acres of beautifully manicured parkland. Once the home of the ancient Scudamore family, there are also links to the mighty Howards, Dukes of Norfolk. The house was also the elegant seat of the Earls of Chesterfield and the grand interior pays testament to these glory days – including an opulent wood-panelled dining room and the Blue Room, with its intricate plasterwork. Leisure pursuits on offer include bowls, tennis, archery and croquet.
