Wales at War:
Noblemen and Normans
A combination of nature and Edward I’s determination to suppress the rebellious Welsh has created one of Britain’s most dramatic landscapes, with castles that have survived nearly a thousand years, the glorious peaks and valleys of Snowdonia and the fast-moving waters of the Menai Strait.
We call at Beaumaris, a town dominated by its impeccably constructed concentric castle, started in 1295. From here we go to Plas Newydd House and Gardens, (pictured left) a fine country house built on the banks of the Menai Strait with views towards Snowdonia’s mountains. Its most famous past resident is the 1st Marquess of Anglesey, who commanded the cavalry at Waterloo in 1815. The elegant interior owes more to the 1930s, thanks to its associations with the artist, socialite and fallen WW2 soldier Rex Whistler. The gardens, including an Australasian arboretum, are also a treat for the senses.
Included for free: ‘The Magnificent Home of the Marquess’ tour at Plas Newydd.
700 years of history are etched into the stones of Chirk Castle (pictured left), the last of Edward Longshanks’ magnificent for tresses still inhabited today. The medieval dungeons and tower are relics of more spartan times, while the Long Gallery and State Rooms are sumptuous by comparison. Outside, the garden of rare trees and shrubs offers views across nine countries.
We also explore Bodnant Garden, reputed to be one of the world’s most spectacular gardens – not least because of its beautiful Laburnum Arch, waterfall and profusion of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias.
We begin the day with a brief stop at the Conwy Suspension Bridge (pictured left), Thomas Telford’s graceful construction of 1826.
From here we travel to Penrhyn Castle, an atmospheric Neo-Norman pile packed with weird and wonderful treasures, including a one-ton slate bed made for Queen Victoria. While the heavy mock-Norman furniture alludes to North Wales’ conflicts with Edward I, it was the future Edward VII who once visited Penrhyn. Head to the beautifully restored kitchens for a vivid glimpse of life as a Victorian servant.
On our final day we check out of our hotel and head to a handpicked National Trust property on the way home, where we’ll make a short stop.
Bodelwyddan Castle
Grade II listed, 1830
With inspiring mountain views and 200 acres of Victorian parkland, this imposing Victorian folly resembles the medieval fortresses scattered along the rugged North Welsh coast. The intimidating arrow slits and crenellations of the exterior belie the comfort of the accommodation within, where you’ll find excellently appointed rooms and a fantastic restaurant and pub. Bowls fans can use the indoor facilities and a crown green; there is also an indoor pool.
A partnership with the National Portrait Gallery means guests can enjoy a permanent exhibition of wonderful art.
