National Trust Breaks  Yorkshire's Georgian Treasures

Yorkshire's
Georgian Treasures

The glorious Yorkshire countryside provides the perfect backdrop for the county’s elegant Georgian houses and gardens, as well as much more ancient places – including the medieval cityscape of York and the 900 years of history spanned at wonderful Fountains Abbey.

We journey to the city of York, spending the morning soaking up the historic atmosphere by wandering the twisting medieval lanes or exploring the glorious Minster.

In the afternoon we travel to the grand but unintimidating Georgian mansion that is Beningbrough Hall and Gardens (pictured left). Beningbrough is known for its art and we have the whole afternoon to admire the huge collection of wonderful portraits in their baroque setting. Outside are magnificent grounds, including a working garden that supplies the Walled Garden Restaurant.

The Royal Horticultural Society-owned RHS Garden Harlow Carr (pictured left) is where we begin the day. Set in the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire countryside, Harlow Carr is a landscape of water, woodland and stone that is bound to inspire the amateur gardener. While the displays are frequently innovative there is plenty of scope for wildlife to be left alone to flourish.

From here we go to East Riddlesden Hall, a pretty manor house full of character and beautiful furnishings including textiles, Yorkshire oak furniture and pewter. Outside is a magnificent oak framed barn dating from the 17th century.

We spend a day at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden, the former the largest monastic ruin in Britain. Here, we join a guided tour entitled ‘White Monks & Monasteries’, which tells a gripping story of religion, money and power.

Nestling in the Skell Valley, the ruin is surrounded by some 800 acres of gorgeous countryside. Leave plenty of time to fully explore the Georgian Water Garden, with its wonderful views, cascades, follies and statues, and the medieval deer park.

Included for free: ‘White Monks and Monasteries’ tour at Fountains Abbey.

On our final day we check out of our hotel and head to a handpicked National Trust property on the way home, where we’ll make a short stop.

Nidd Hall
Grade II Listed, 1820

Situated just outside Harrogate, Nidd Hall is a charming brick house with sprawling grounds featuring topiary and a maze. The interior is full of surprises, from exquisite stained glass panels to copper ceilings. Scene of many glamorous parties in the past, it’s rumoured that Wallis Simpson met the future Edward VIII here. These days, Nidd Hall offers an award-winning restaurant, putting green and beautiful reception rooms.
