Journey behind the Tornado steam locomotive
We head to Grosmont station where we board our train behind the legendary locomotive Tornado for a picturesque steam-hauled journey through the North York Moors National Park to Pickering and back, enjoying the beautiful vistas along the way. Built by the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, this magnificent £3 million locomotive was completed in 2008 after 18 years of construction and fundraising.
The train stations are also fascinating heritage attractions in their own right. The 1952 themed Grosmont Station is home to the operating and engineering world of the NYMR. Here we can find the engine sheds where their steam and diesel locomotives are maintained and restored. Pickering Station is a 1930s themed station that transports us back in time to the steam era. A highlight of the station is the magnificent roof structure which was recently re-instated to the same design as the original, built in 1847.
