Itinerary

Ferry from Dover to Calais and journey onwards to our hotel in Brussels.

We enjoy a full day exploring Belgium’s vibrant capital, beginning with a guided walking tour through the historic heart of Brussels. We then continue with a panoramic coach tour, taking in landmarks such as the National Basilica and the striking Atomium. Along the way, enjoy a traditional Belgian waffle tasting – a delicious taste of local culture! With time to explore at your own pace, discover museums, sample chocolate or simply soak up the city’s unique charm and cosmopolitan flair.

Enjoy a day of leisure, relaxing at the hotel or exploring the local sights in the picturesque region of Ath-Lessines.

We start the day with a lovely train ride along the old line of the Valley of de Bocq. The train cuts a path through tunnels and over viaducts, with plenty of quaint countryside to admire. After disembarking, we make our way to Namur, nestled at the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre rivers. This pretty medieval city is overlooked by a sprawling hilltop citadel, below which stands a picturesque Old Town and cobblestone lanes dotted with cafés, restaurants and shops.

Today, we take part in a fully guided tour to explore the legendary Waterloo Battlefield, where the fate of Europe was decided on 18th June 1815 in one of history’s most iconic confrontations. This was the final defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte, where over 250,000 soldiers from across Europe clashed in a momentous struggle. Our visit begins at the Lion’s Mound, a striking memorial offering panoramic views over the battlefield, before entering the circular Panorama building to see the vast 19th-century painting that vividly captures the chaos and heroism of the day. We then delve deeper at the interactive museum, where immersive multimedia displays, a gripping 3D film, authentic uniforms, weaponry and detailed maps bring the story of Waterloo to life. Learn about the strategies, the soldiers on both sides and the broader political implications of the battle, which reshaped Europe’s future.

Today, we enjoy a picturesque journey through the lush landscapes of the Meuse Valley aboard a historic steam train. As we wind along the scenic route, take in views of wooded hillsides, charming villages and the gently flowing Meuse River. This nostalgic ride offers a glimpse into Belgium’s rich railway heritage, with lovingly restored carriages and a traditional locomotive. There’s time to relax and enjoy the view – a delightful day of steam and scenery.

After breakfast, we check out of our hotel and head to Calais for our return ferry home.
