From a morning pickup in your local area, we travel by coach to our hotel.
Step back nearly two millennia as we follow the route of Hadrian’s Wall, the monumental fortification built by the Romans to guard the northern frontier of their empire. Travelling along the scenic Military Road, we take in striking views of the rugged Northumberland landscape before exploring one of Britain’s most remarkable archaeological sites. At Chesters Fort – the best-preserved Roman cavalry fort in the country – discover the remains of bathhouses, barracks and gateways and imagine life on the edge of the ancient Roman world.
Full Day
We journey to the magnificent city of Durham, gracefully perched on the banks of the River Wear. Famed for its breathtaking Norman cathedral and 11th-century castle – both UNESCO World Heritage Sites – this historic university city is brimming with character and charm. Take time to wander its cobbled streets, lined with elegant architecture, independent boutiques and welcoming cafés, or enjoy a little retail therapy in its stylish shops and markets.
We start with a visit to the historic Holy Island of Lindisfarne, lying just a few miles off the Northumberland coast. Only accessible twice a day at low tide, this beautifully unspoilt island is where Christianity first took hold in Britain and is also home to a picturesque 16th-century castle and an array of wildlife. Featured in the hugely popular TV series Downton Abbey and still home to the Duke of Northumberland and his family, our next stop of Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England. The lavish State Rooms contain an eclectic array of furniture, ceramics and art collected by the Percy family for over 700 years.
After breakfast, we check out of the hotel and board the coach for the journey home.
