We begin our first day of excursions at Powderham Castle, which has been home to the Courtenay family for over 600 years, having been built by Sir Philip Courtenay in the 14th century. Located on the peaceful banks of the River Exe, this historical gem offers impressive turrets, an elegant façade and enchanting gardens. Our guided tour with the owner*, Lord Devon, is the perfect chance to explore the well-preserved interiors packed with rare art and antiques, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of its past inhabitants.
Next up is the imposing Ugbrooke House, a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and architecture admirers alike. Nestled within the beautiful Devon countryside, this manor has stood proudly for over 900 years, beckoning visitors to discover the grandeur within (think precious artefacts and plenty of elegant antiques). Outside offers an enticing network of colourful walkways, secret walled gardens and parkland designed by Capability Brown. We enjoy a tour complete with a traditional Devonshire cream tea.
