Itinerary

From a morning pickup in your local area, we travel by coach to our hotel.

Our first visit takes us to the National Trust's Melford Hall. During its history, this red-brick Tudor mansion with picturesque turrets has played host to Queen Elizabeth I, seen Civil War unrest and survived a disastrous fire in 1942. Home to the Hyde Parker family for more than two centuries, it remains their beloved family home to this day and contains fine collections of art, porcelain and furniture.

We continue to picturesque Lavenham, a remarkably well-preserved Tudor village which was one of the richest towns in England during the 15th century, thanks to the woollen-cloth industry. Walking through the village feels like stepping back in time, with its cobbled streets, medieval architecture and crooked houses that seem to defy gravity. Entrance is also included to another National Trust property, Lavenham Guildhall, a fine timber-framed building that is a potent reminder of Lavenham’s former prosperity. Take the chance to discover the stories of the people who have used the Guildhall through its almost 500 years at the heart of the community, learning how it was a prison, workhouse and meeting place.

Full Day

We embark on our exploration of Constable Country, meandering to John Constable's birthplace of East Bergholt through the picturesque Stour Valley and Dedham Vale, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty made famous by his paintings. After our scenic journey, enjoy some time in the idyllic village of Dedham, where Constable went to school. Set on the River Stour with scenic water meadows, the village is the epitome of rural England with an attractive main street lined with Georgian-fronted houses, old inns and a large arts and crafts centre. We also make a stop in the quaint hamlet of Flatford, where we can admire some of the key views and locations which inspired many of Constable’s iconic masterpieces, including Flatford Mill and Willy Lott’s House, immortalised in The Haywain.

Full Day

The Beth Chatto Gardens awaits, the inspirational and informal gardens which were begun in 1960 by award-winning gardener Beth Chatto OBE. The series of gardens includes Gravel, Water and Woodland gardens and were created using Chatto’s ecological gardening method and mantra of ‘the right plant for the right place’, where plants grow best when placed in conditions closest to their own habitat. A testament to sustainable gardening practices and innovative design, these gardens span several acres and offer bursts of colour throughout the year  – they are a real delight to explore.

We then head to the coast and spend some time in Clacton-on-Sea. Popular since the early 20th century, this historic seaside town is known for its sandy beaches and Victorian pier with traditional amusements – it's the perfect spot to enjoy some proper chips!

Full Day

After breakfast, we check out of the hotel and board the coach for the journey home.
