Impressions of Brittany

We continue our journey to Saint-Brieuc, stopping en-route to visit the iconic Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey, perched on a rocky tidal island and boasting a mix of Gothic and Romanesque styles plus beautiful views of the bay. Dating back to the 8^th century, legend has it that Archangel Michael appeared to Bishop Aubert three times in a dream, asking him to build a sanctuary in his honour. After Benedictine monks settled from 966, it soon became a significant place of pilgrimage and welcomed several French and English monarchs, including Henry II Plantagenet, Louis XI and Anne of Brittany. Over the centuries, the abbey became an important centre of culture, a vital stronghold during the Hundred Year's War and then a prison during the ancien régime. As one of the first treasures to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage list, it really is a must-see while in this region of France. Later, we also enjoy lunch at your leisure in the historic port and walled city of Saint Malo before checking in to our hotel in Saint-Brieuc.

Today we explore some of the highlights of stunning Brittany, starting with Lamballe. The historic town centre is perfect for a stroll, full of half-timbered houses and 18^th-century private mansions. The majestic Notre-Dame collegiate church and the 15^th-century Maison du Bourreau with its eye-catching burgundy-coloured timbers are particularly beautiful, and the latter is now home to the Mathurin Méheut Museum, dedicated to the works of the eminent Breton artist.

We continue to Moncontour, an enchanting medieval walled town and a recognised Petite Cité de Caractère. Perched on a hill, this French gem offers stunning views of the surrounding peaceful countryside and a network of cobbled streets, lined with well-preserved stone houses which were once home to wealthy merchants of the town's cloth trade. The charming squares, pretty gardens, defensive walls and ancient gates add to the atmosphere here, while Saint-Mathurin church is well worth a look, boasting exceptional stained glass windows, an ornate clocktower and intricate woodwork.

Our last stop is Vannes on the southern coast of Brittany. Head to the vibrant harbour with its long walkway and medieval gate leading to the Old Town, admire the mix of architectural styles of the 16^th-century Vannes Cathedral, discover the wide range of works on display at the Museum of Fine Arts, browse the selection of charming shops and enjoy a rest in one of the lovely cafés.

Travelling north, we make our way to the lovely seaside town of Saint-Quay-Portrieux, known for its stunning landscapes, for some free time. Take the chance to wander along the sea wall to the sound of the lapping waves before sampling some fresh seafood in one of the local restaurants at your leisure.

Nestled along the Pink Granite Coast, our next stop of Tréguier is another listed Petite Cité de Caractère and a charming port town renowned for its medieval architecture, little squares, magnificent cathedral and vibrant arts scene, with galleries and workshops showcasing local talent. Don't miss the crêperies along the waterfront too!

Lastly, we take a boat cruise to Sept-Iles Archipelago, a group of seven unspoilt islands off the Brittany coast. As they are mostly uninhabited, the area is a haven for birdlife and wildlife, with species including puffins, gannets, seals and more. The perfect end to our day, you can expect a stunning landscape of serene beaches, salty marshes, expansive bogs and dense forests here.
