Itinerary

From a morning pickup in your local area, we travel by coach to Ropley, where we catch the diesel shuttle to Alresford through the Hampshire countryside. Here, we board our train behind the magnificent Flying Scotsman for a picturesque steam-hauled round trip journey on the Watercress Line, meandering through beautiful rural panoramas and passing the watercress beds that give the railway its name. Sit back and relax as we journey to Alton, where there's a chance to stretch our legs and enjoy a drink before travelling back to Alresford. There's plenty of time to capture that perfect photo of this national treasure, browse the souvenirs, explore the station surrounds and head towards the Cattle Dock to snap a shot of the Flying Scotsman as it departs with the next train. After a wonderful experience, we catch the shuttle back to Ropley – look out for the historic footbridge which was originally located at King's Cross in London and featured in Hitchcock's The 39 Steps! We then make our way to our hotel, where we enjoy dinner and a relaxing overnight stay.

After breakfast, we check out of our hotel and travel to the historic city of Winchester, situated on the edge of the South Downs National Park. As England’s ancient capital, it was once the seat of King Alfred the Great and the city’s Great Hall is home to the legendary Arthurian Round Table. The cathedral is well worth a visit with its beautiful, illuminated Winchester Bible, 12th-century wall paintings and medieval carvings, or there are bustling shopping streets and cafés to enjoy. In the afternoon, we continue our journey home.

Accommodation

We’ll stay at a well-appointed hotel (JG3 or JG4 rating) such as The Angel Hotel in Alton, The Hampshire Court Hotel in Basingstoke or The Holiday Inn, Basingstoke. All rooms are en suite and other facilities include a bar and restaurant.

Your hotel will be confirmed approximately 3 weeks before departure, therefore we cannot guarantee that the hotel will have a lift and/or ground floor rooms and may be unsuitable for those with limited mobility.

Hotel Rating

Hotels with a JG3 rating tend to be a more formal style of hotel, often part of a hotel chain, or are very-welcoming family-owned properties. Generally, they offer a greater range of facilities and services, and bedrooms tend to be a little more spacious with additional features. Public areas are larger and include lounge seating, bar and restaurant with good quality food served either buffet style or waiter service.

Accommodation in our JG4 category is of an even higher standard, typically offering a wide range of facilities and services. Bedrooms are designed to make your stay the most comfortable possible and the staff provide a service that reflects the detail and quality. You can also expect higher standards of food and beverages.
